About the Sien Lok Society of Calgary
The Sien Lok Society of Calgary was incorporated in 1968 in response to a real threat to the continued existence of Calgary’s Chinatown. Having helped preserve the historic Chinese district, Sien Lok continues to work for the betterment of the Chinese Community. True to its name which translate to “happiness through good works”, Sien Lok continues in benevolent activities that honour the presence of Chinese culture in Calgary’s social fabric.
The Sien Lok society of Calgary has, for over years, been working to build a better understanding and relationships between people of Chinese ancestry and all Canadians through the promotion of the Chinese language, philosophies and culture. Sien Lok prides itself in being a on-political, not-for-profit, philanthropic organization working for the betterment of the Chinese Canadian community.
Sien Lok has successfully spanned several generation in its membership realizing that growth and viability of the Society depends on cultivating new members with similar values and ideals. Currently, the Society has an active and dedicated Board of Directors, a solid volunteer core, a diverse membership and numerous community partners and supporters.
Since its establishment in 1968, the Sien Lok Society has achieved many worthy undertakings. The completion of Phase II of the Sien Lok Park development was an important milestone in SIen Lok’s history as it signaled the completion of Sien Lok’s original mandate, to preserve Calgary’s Chinatown from demolition. In order to continue its work, the Society embarked on an ambitious process of self examination. Sien Lok invested in several internally focused sessions including a Historical Scan of Sien Lok’s past, visioning for the future, strategic planning and developing an action plan to move forward with new goals. As a result, Sien Lok’s new mission statement reads: To achieve our vision of a community where lives are touched, enriched and refreshed through rich ties to our own culturally diverse communities, we will engage in cultural preservation, and promotional activities for those affected by or are interest in Chinese Canadian Culture.
